Papering Over: An Exhibition at Jones Gallery
I am so excited to be showing this new series of work with Jones Gallery!
This exhibition is a new body of paintings and mixed media works titled Papering Over exploring the impact of our houses on self expression and our identity.
The places we live are a reflection of ourselves, and each decision, colour choice, and pattern selection tells those around us who we are. These compositions will examine the way our houses transform into self portraits while we occupy them, and the resulting works will be a thorough consideration of our desire to carve out our own tangible space within our greater community.
The architecture of my current home of Newfoundland and Labrador is the inspiration for this series. In my practice, I connect to each structural subject by using materials that have a connection to our homes, such as house paint and paint chips. The addition of collaged wallpaper samples in this new body of work brings the unique colours, textures, and opportunities for self expression of interior decoration into the physical language of these works.
This body of work consists of mixed media paintings on wooden panels and has generated a new method of creating work with new materials, incorporating acrylic paint, house paint, and wallpaper. The colour palette was pulled from my environment in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the work was created in my home studio in St. John’s, NL.
